Tuner2 HiFi Radio is an app for Apple iPhone / iPod Touch that uses the Tuner2 Internet radio directory service.

HiFi streaming audio arrives to iPhone. It is now possible to stream high fidelity audio over cellular EDGE/3GPP and Internet networks to compete with other audio delivery services such as Satellite, HD Radio, and Apple iTunes downloads. In many cases, it is even possible to surpass their quality by using more advanced HE-AACv2 audio codecs. This raises the bar for streaming audio quality. The world's most popular music download site, Apple iTunes, is powered by AAC encoded audio content. Contrary to popular belief, it is not MP3. AAC was chosen for improved audio quality and DRM abilities. iTunes DRM is now fading, so the popularity of AAC is now on the rise. HE-AACv2 is the next generation audio codec. It provides higher efficiency. Tuner2 Player now brings this technology to the iPhone/iTouch devices for live streaming audio, allowing streams with comparable audio quality to downloaded files. Mobile data networks are crowded places. Despite what most mobile carriers claim, they may be able to deliver high data rates, but only for short periods of time. What is most important for reliable live streaming, is the ability to achieve a low, consistent data rate over the network. Since this is often very difficult to do on today's mobile networks, our player uses a combination of an advanced audio codec, HE-AACv2, and careful audio buffer control to greatly improve player reliability and compatibility for a smooth user experience on both EDGE and 3GPP cellular networks. Even more, these same streams can be received by any other standards-based mobile device, giving you huge device type coverage from a single streaming server.

Not only is improved audio quality important to the consumer, but graphical and textual information about the content they are listening to, and the ability to purchase the content, is a consideration as well. By using compatible streaming encoder software, such as Orban Opticodec-PC 3.x, it is now possible to stream this information in real-time with the audio without custom software solutions, dramatically reducing deployment costs, and time to market.
